Gah. This video makes me homesick. Pacific Division's "Mayor" has been on the "most played" (played in a good way, lol) list in my itunes for a while now, but this video damn near brought a tear to my temporary Atlantan, bout to be Iowan eyes. The Forum, the Roscoes t-shirt, the beach, the palm trees, even the random shooting noise that causes everybody to duck down for a second, it truly captures the essence of LA. The real LA, not the one that out-of-towners paint as superficial and label-obsessed. Most of the superficial "hollywood-types" aren't from LA at all; they're from the East Coast, the Midwest, the South and wherever else you're… Read More
“Three Months of Pleasure…”
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Ever since I was ten I knew it was summer not because of how my hair shriveled up, but because local DJs break out the song every child in Long Beach should be required to know. "Summertime in the LBC" reminds me of being pushed off of diving boards into swimming pools by adults, and free county box lunches from the park - with those extra dry turkey sandwiches and one chocolate chip cookie you tried to convince your home girl she didn't want. My old babysitter "Aunt Flo" use to have us… Read More
Proper Song: I Wish It Was Friday…
Thursday, March 5th, 2009
...but it's not. The light-skinded girl in Zhane had the Amber Rose buzz cut before Kanye deemed it haute. Kudos to her for that. The other girl had finger waves....not so sure how I feel about that (were finger waves hot in the early 90s??). Anywho, I woke up with this little ditty on the brain. Zhane hailed from Philly and "Hey Mr. DJ" came out in 1993. Happy Thursday.
Invasion of the Late 80’s/Early 90’s Beat Snatchers

Word to our "drafts" section, I was gonna post TLC's "Baby, Baby, Baby" as the Proper Song today (it had been in my head since Sunday), but then the impishly evil Shad Moss (aka Bow Wow) released a video that took all the fun out of my trip down memory lane. This shit is borderline blasphemous:
Proper Song of the Day: End of the Road
Monday, February 9th, 2009
We haven't done a Proper Song of the Day in a while (truth be told, we haven't done much around here in a minute...we're working on some things, so forgive us). There's no telling if we actually would have thrown these daily songs in the can, but then the Grammys proved why the music industry is in the toilet, and we felt obliged to keep the good times rolling. Your radio won't drop the good stuff, or the oldies but goodies, so Proper Talks is to the rescue! Now truth be told, I'm a sucker for award shows but last night was abysmal right? I'm not even a fan of Radiohead but they (out of alllll of that star power) were the highlight of last… Read More
Proper Song of the Day: Manwomanboogie
Friday, January 16th, 2009
Manwomanboogie is my favorite track off the latest Q-tip record so I'm geeked he finally released a video for it. The director, Rik Cordero, definitely redeemed himself with this joint considering his latest work. I'm glad to see dude's repertoire runs deeper than CGIs of Yasser Arafat. Cordero's vision for Manwomanboogie doesn't fit what I had in mind (the song always makes me want to do some Tae Bo type stunts on a dance floor - thankfully the video has none of that) but I likes.
A surreal performance… Read More
