Ciara Steals My Childhood Cheer.

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Well, actually not my cheer in the traditional sense, but she definitely does steal part of the little black girl songs I remember from my youth for her new video "Work." Amidst all the gyrating and some impressive dancing (I give props to anyone with the knees for all that low-to-the-ground booty popping), Ciara throws in a few lines from the sassy girl games and songs I remember playing growing up:
"We got the rhythm of the beat, we got the ryhtm of the hands, lets get the rhythm of the feet. Jump in, jump out, jump in, jump out."
She might as well have said, "my hands up high, my feet down low, and this the… Read More

“Three Months of Pleasure…”

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
Ever since I was ten I knew it was summer not because of how my hair shriveled up, but because local DJs break out the song every child in Long Beach should be required to know. "Summertime in the LBC" reminds me of being pushed off of diving boards into swimming pools by adults, and free county box lunches from the park - with those extra dry turkey sandwiches and one chocolate chip cookie you tried to convince your home girl she didn't want.   My old babysitter "Aunt Flo" use to have us… Read More

English-Only Supporters Can’t Spell

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Poor Pat Buchanan and his cohorts continue to give us reasons why they should be ignored. This, however, is too tragic to dismiss:     Oddly enough "conferenece" sort of rolls off the tongue like a Spanish word. Pat and company better brush up on the Engahlash before the Obama administration forces everyone to speak Spanglish (folk at the conference really believe this will happen). It would suck if the all-white, English supporters, were forced to spew their idiotic rhetoric in two languages.    More on the conference,… Read More

Proper Talking Points

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

If you haven't noticed, Angela and I have been on an Internet hiatus. Ang was in Puerto Rico and I, well, I have a crappy computer (death to Toshiba!) and haven't been able to do anything but play with Twitter on my phone.   Being away from the Internets isn't half bad. Sometimes I feel like I'm on information overdrive and the web definitely doesn't help those gloomy days when I'm down and out. Reading about death, recession, and school cuts doesn't necessarily make me want to run down the… Read More

Los Angeles Mayor or new Lakers' GM?

Over the course of 5 games the Lakers' killed my shot at being an ESPN analyst. The Shallow Girl's Guide was going to be my token to the pre-game/halftime/post-game show instead of the sideline gig ESPN typically reserves for female reporters. I could blame Dwight Howard for ruining my chances but I'm still… Read More
