The GOP’s ‘Magic Negro’ Problem

It’s no secret the GOP has had color issues as of late. Now it looks like ole Chip Saltsman is the latest to dig his political grave on account of these issues. Unless the GOP still wants insensitive political thugs heading their party, Chip’s a goner.
Would-be RNC Chair Chip Saltsman’s decision to send out a Christmas CD to GOP committee-members featuring a song calling our President-elect “Barack the Magic Negro” is the just latest sign of Republicans’ tone deafness when it comes to race. It’s a problem that has led directly to the pathetic lack of diversity on its political bench and underscores the party’s long-term challenge of regaining relevance in the Age of Obama. [The Daily Beast]
It’s painfully clear Chip didn’t get the ‘change’ memo fresh off the elephant’s behind. You know the one where the Republican party was going to try to be more inclusive, and not look so much like prime time television.
It says a lot about the GOP and its public persona for Chip to think it was okay to send out Paul Shanklin garbage. The whole point of a gift is to give someone something you’d think they would enjoy. Where in the world would Chip get the idea that committee members would like the “Magic Negro” song? I’m guessing a McCain/Palin rally or the party’s convention this year. I wonder how many of the people who received the CD would have been blasting it on their radios if the media hadn’t caught wind of it.
While the Grand Old Party feigns outrage toward Chip and his holiday CD, I think the other crucial part of this story is Chip’s ridiculous attempt to pull the media card. Says, Chip:
Liberal Democrats and their allies in the media didn’t utter a word about David Ehrenstein’s irresponsible column in the Los Angeles Times last March. But now, of course, they’re shocked and appalled by its parody on the ‘Rush Limbaugh Show.’
I firmly believe that we must welcome all Americans into our party and that the road to Republican resurgence begins with unity, not division. But I know that our party leaders should stand up against the media’s double standards and refuse to pander to their desire for scandal [Fox News]
I’m rather tired of politicians blaming the media because they forget to retrieve their brains out of the gutter. Chip’s response to heat from his own party is an amateur attempt to divert the attention from himself, and we’d all be just as dumb as he is to fall for it. It reminds of me of when little kids say they teased the fattest kid on the playground because everyone else was doing it. A fellow conservative or not, Rush Limbaugh is not the guy to emulate if you’re trying to be the next GOP head. In fact, anyone trying to get the new gig should do away with tactics of the past.
Hopefully the GOP will back up all this outrage when it’s time to select the next captain of the Republican sinker. Watch carefully for anyone who thinks Chip’s move was okay. If Chip, or any of his supporters, get the spot, don’t be too surprsied when the ‘magic negroes’ stay away.
