Warren Pick: (W)right or Wrong?

I don’t really have much to say about Obama tapping Rick Warren to give a speech amongst a whole bunch of other speeches nobody will remember because only one speech will really rock the house on January 20. I’ve been a huge advocate for LGBT rights but I think people are overreacting here. All of the blogs, news articles, pundit talk, only guarantees that Rick Warren has a shot of being remembered as someone who took part in what will be a historic day. Do you know or remember which religious figure spoke at Bush’s inauguration? What about Clinton’s? Nixon’s? And, I mean do you know without a google search? Bet you’ll remember who spoke at Obama’s. Not because of the first black president thing, but because of all the talk. Best way to stomp a bigot is to ignore him. Sure, Obama didn’t do that, but we can. Anyway, I guess I lied when I said I didn’t have much to say. My. Bad.
Really, I wanted to point your attention over to Bob Cesca’s Goddamn Awesome Blog (Love that name). Lee Stranahan makes a good point – all of this bashing from the left against Warren is similar to the heat Reverend Jeremiah Wright took from the right during the campaign. The evidence:
1) We get the same soundbites repeated over and over and over, as if hearing ‘God DAMN America!’ or “5000 years of traditional’ ten more times will suddenly make everyone not freaked out finally get it and join the freak out.
2) Total context dropping about the importance of the person to Obama and what he’s going to do as President. With Wright it was ‘Obama sat in Rev. Wright’s pew for YEARS!’, with Warren it’s “Look, this is a HUGELY IMPORTANT three minute prayer!”
3) The supposed ripping of the mask off the REAL Obama – “See! This PROVES he hates America / gays and lesbians! I knew it the whole time!”
4) Wright / Warren preach the politics of HATE! (Don’t believe it? Quick, roll that soundbite again.) Hate, I say!!! They are so hateful that if you don’t hate them, then you’re a hater too and we hate haters so we hate! [Read more]
Random thought sparked by the pic above and # 5: Obama should respond to questions about picking Warren, Maino style. Or is that something Bush would do?
