Call in Gay Today

Today is ”Day Without A Gay” day! Opponents of Proposition 8, and other anti-gay laws in the country, are urging people to call in gay today.  Those who call in gay are suppose to volunteer their services at various non-profits or other volunteer centers where they can give back love to the community:

Gay people and our allies are compassionate, sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success. A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love.  On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes.

So far, there hasn’t been much news indicating the effectiveness of the boycott, but it will be interesting to see if people play hooky in the middle of a recession.  A day without gays might have been more effective before the election so people could have seen how integral gays are to society and showed their support at the polls.

Ironically the planned protest falls on the same day President-elect Obama selected Nancy Sutley to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Sutley will be the first prominent member of the gay and lesbian community to have a senior role in the White House.  I wonder if she called Obama to tell him she couldn’t start work today?

Last week Gawker  joked about what a day without gays would look like:

There Would Be No Celebrity Gossip
It’s true! Certain gay people write showbiz secrets for a living—like Perez Hilton and the guy from Dlisted and A.J. Hammer (probably). Without these noble souls, for one whole day, the internet would be a barren landscape of sports reporting and financial news. And gross straight pornography. And, actually, you wouldn’t be able to read Lifehacker, even! The internet is full of gays and run by gays so I guess everyone would just have to, gulp, do work.

Funny stuff. Anyone experience a gay-less day today? Do tell.

Sadly most of my days are gay-less, to the best of my knowledge. And I’m in ATL…it’s quite depressing.
