Tracing Michelle Obama’s Roots

I’m a day or two late, but it seems the Chicago Tribune has the real story that CNN was grasping for, and it’s pretty interesting.

During the primaries the Obama Campaign hired geneologists at LowCountry Africana, a research center at the University of South Florida in Tampa  to research Michelle’s family history. Their 120-page report details the Robinson [Michelle's maiden name] history from 1850 to 2008.

Their documented passage begins with Jim Robinson, Michelle Obama’s great-great-grandfather, who was born about 1850 and lived as a slave, at least until the Civil War, on the sprawling rice plantation. Records show he remained on the estate after the war, working as a sharecropper and living in the old slave quarters with his wife, Louiser, and their children. He could neither read nor write, according to the 1880 census. Robinson would be the last illiterate branch of Michelle Obama’s family tree.

Little is known about Jim Robinson’s life at the Friendfield Plantation, beyond that he worked in the riverfront rice fields after the Civil War. Local historians don’t know how or when he came to Friendfield, but census records indicate both his parents were born in South Carolina. The coastal Carolina city often is referred to as the African-American Ellis Island because of the many slave ships that docked along its shores.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “Obama aides refused to discuss the report or allow Michelle Obama to be interviewed about her ancestry.” I can think of possible reasons for wanting to downplay Michelle’s slave ancestry (if that’s even possible) during the campaign, but now I hope more information from the report will be shared.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has an amazing (often tear-jerking) series on PBS where he helps celebrities and a few regular folk track their ancestry back to slavery. It would be great to see him chronicle full story of Michelle O’s people too. I know my mom would buy the DVD of that joint and leave it wrapped in the plastic for posterity, just like her collector’s edition Roots.

Okay when you come home for Christmas the wrap is coming off of the Roots DVD, can’t keep waiting for the grand babies.
Interesting story and I agree it would be a perfect topic for the PBS story. Just another reminder of how historic this election is.

Easily, the topic of the Michelle Obama ideas about music is really a burning question. Her thinking is deserving contribution to this interesting discussion of music art. We have to watch it carefully. In fact I do not fit in with every aspects of Michelle Obama, but in general I am fully in line this realistic use of pop music. I am looking forward to next development from Michelle, which eventually brings additional ideas.
