WWD asked a slew designers of designers to submit sketches of the dress they’d like Michelle Obama to wear at the inauguration ball on January 20. Designers from the standard-fare Isaac Mizrahi to the newer-to-the-scene Rodarte submitted what they’d design for the future First Lady’s big night. WWD has a great slideshow of all of the designs, but we’d like to highlight a few that fell flat, the ones that made us super excited, and a couple that elicited a gutteral “WTF”:

 

 

 

The Bleh:

 Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel: I know, I know, I must be among the “demode ones” for not falling all over these designs. But seriously, Michelle is too fierce for the standard first lady pant/skirt suit, and while I’m sure the dress will have an amazing fit, (in my best Michael Cors on Project Runway voice) “where’s the drama??”

 

 

Marc Jacobs: Again, I love Marc and wish I could afford more of him (I’s po), but I just dont think this is the “wow” dress that Michelle deserves. The wrapping detail at the waist is flattering, but the layering on the hips is a no-no. We here at Propertalks are done discussing Michelle’s body, but I will say that I am rather er, ample on the bottom half and those yellow layers would do me no justice.

 

Isaac Mizrahi for Target: Eh…something about this says Easter chic.

 

 

The Beautiful:

Michael Kors: The color pops and Michelle has the shoulder to pull off this asymetrical look. In the words of Rachel Zoe, I die.

 

 

Oscar de la Renta: The neckline needs to come up a bit, but overall I think this would look great on Michelle and the kids would be stylin too.

 

 Monique Lhuillier: Hello, drama! It’s sexy and sophisticated, and at 5ft 11inches tall, Michelle has the height to pull it off.

 

The WTF Dresses:

 

Betsy Johnson: It’s Besty Johnson, what did you expect?

 

 

Christian Lacroix: It’s Cruella DeVille meets Grace Jones with a Dolly Parton purse.

 

 

 Koi Suwannagate: Popcorny? Crinkly? Ticker-tape parade? Hell-to-the-no.

 

There were plenty of other so-so and to-die for sketches submitted, which ones would you like to see Ms. Obama rock come January?
